Jobs for the month
- Plant garlic and fava beans in pots at least 20-25 cm (8-10 in) deep: their roots run deeper than you'd think.
- Water less: in cool weather the soil stays moist longer, and waterlogging rots seeds and cloves.
- Move frost-tender plants (basil, chili peppers, young citrus) to a sheltered spot or a bright window indoors.
- Pick the last chilies and green tomatoes before the first cold nights: they finish ripening indoors.
