Oregano is the pizza herb and one of the easiest to grow: it wants sun and little attention. It's at its best when harvested in flower and dried.

Feedingevery ~21 days in season

Pot and soil

A pot 20-25 cm (8-10 in) wide, even a shallow one: it spreads more than it grows tall. Light, free-draining, not too rich mix.

Light and position

Full sun: the more sun, the stronger the aroma.

Watering

About every 4 days in summer, letting the surface dry between waterings. Very little in winter.

Feeding

Little: a balanced feed every 3 weeks in spring and summer. Rich soil makes it less aromatic.

Harvest

When it's ready

Best for drying at the start of flowering (June-July).

How to harvest

Cut stems 5 cm above the soil and hang them upside down in the shade.

Common problems

Weak aroma

Too little light or too much water and feed. Move it to full sun and cut back on both.

Long, floppy stems

Cut it back by half in early summer: it regrows compact.

Yellow leaves at the base

Waterlogging: check drainage and water less.
